It stands as one of drag racing's most improbable victories.
From 1975 until 1978, the legendary Don "The Snake" Prudhomme was seemingly unbeatable. Just days before the 1978 NHRA U.S. Nationals, Tom "The Mongoose" McEwen had lost his son Jamie to Leukemia and wasn't planning to race.
His fellow racers, friends, and family encouraged the drag racing icon to compete, citing what Jamie would have wanted. And he would have wanted him to beat Prudhomme, even though Jamie was fond of Prudhomme. He was McEwen's greatest fan.
When McEwen was granted a bye run into the final because his opponent had crossed the centerline on a single into the semis, one could immediately sense fate working in the Mongoose's favor. Then, as he and Prudhomme left the starting line, Prudhomme's Funny Car began to haze the tires, and McEwen pulled away for the win.
